Biliary Disease

This Daily Doodle represents the academic half day lecture on Biliary Disease. The gallbladder, which is surprisingly green, collects and stores bile produced by the liver. Bile is used to emulsify fat and aids in the digestion of lipids in the small intestine.

Stasis of bile can lead to gallstones, which are often asymptomatic. When the gallstone obstructs the cystic duct, it can cause cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder). Pain caused by this obstruction often follows a characteristic pattern = right upper quadrant pain which wraps around the side and to the back and often radiates to the right shoulder.

If the common bile duct becomes obstructed, both the pancreas and the liver can be affected. The obstruction can causes a back up of bile into the liver or pancreatic enzymes into the pancreas, causing cell damage and changes in serum enzyme levels.
